Summary
In 1847 John Augustus Roebling, the future designer of the Brooklyn Bridge, was contracted and began construction on an aqueduct to carry the canal over the Delaware River. Roebling was a pioneering civil engineer and manufacturer of “wire rope.” He had proven himself constructing an aqueduct in Pittsburgh, PA for the Pennsylvania Canal.The Delaware Aqueduct would be the first of four such aqueducts Roebling built for the D & H.
