A view of the Kilauea Crater - Public Domain image, National Parks Gallery
Summary
Crater Rim Historic District. Views of the crater from behind the Volcano House are framed by ferns and low vegetation. This view of the crater rim is the first that many visitors get of Kilauea. The view is observed from a long walkway running the length of the Volcano House. A stone guard wall that follows the path predates the house, when the site was the location of a volcano observatory and volcanologist's residence. It is one of the most accessible views in the park, and it is also unique because of the lush vegetation and sloping crater wall.
