Arbeid (Labor) is ijverig aan het werk en graaft met een schop in de grond. Zijn vrouw Vlijt (Diligentia) kijkt toe, een zandloper in de hand. In het midden staan hun twee zonen: Levensmiddelen (Victus) en Kleding (Amictus). Boven hun hoofden zweven respectivelijk de cornucopia en een dierenvacht.
