090212-N-ER745-046.PEARL HARBOR (Feb. 12, 2009) A Purple Heart certificate awarded in 1943 to Boatswain's Mate 2nd Class Alphonse Eckel beside the United States flag at Eckel's burial at sea at the USS Utah Memorial. Eckel was a Pearl Harbor survivor and served two enlistments in the Navy. His first enlistment was from 1940 to 1946, and his second was from 1951 to 1953.
