Central Hotel CopperDog150 ghost
Summary
"Centrally" located at 316 5th Street, the Central Hotel was convenient to Red Jacket's commercial district and the area's mines. Originally built in 1878, the building was first used as a hotel known as the Commercial House in 1879.
Around 1885 the hotel was doubled in size when it was expanded to the south. In 1893, it was known as the Jewell House, but by 1897 it had become the Central Hotel. Hotel rooms occupied the upper floors of the building; the office, restaurant, and saloon were located on the first floor. The three story building to the south was home to the Northwestern Hotel in the 1880s. In about 1915, it became a hotel again when it was annexed to the Central Hotel.
Out-of-town businesspeople would meet with local customers in "sample rooms" at the Central Hotel. Advertisements from the 1910s demonstrate that locals could also visit the hotel to dine in the restaurant, socialize in the saloon, meet a property agent, have a carpet repaired, or have their fortune told.
Today, the first floor of the annex still stands, though a fire removed its upper floors. The rest of the Central Hotel is #MissingintheCopperCountry.
