Summary

FIshing weather. This is part of one of the nicest drives in Ireland...This is Doolough or Doo Lough one of three lakes that make up the Delphi Fishery, it was called Delphi by the Marquis of Sligo who used to own the fishery. ..Doolough is famously known for the "The Doolough Tragedy" see O Mac PRO ( /photos/91549360@N03/ ) link below. ..On Friday 30 March 1849 two officials of the Westport Poor Law Union arrived in Louisburgh to inspect those people in receipt of outdoor relief to verify that they should continue to receive it. For some reason the inspection did not take place and the officials went on to Delphi Lodge – a hunting lodge – 12 miles (19 km) south of Louisburgh. The people who had gathered for the inspection were thus instructed to appear at Delphi Lodge at 7am the following morning if they wished to continue receiving relief. For much of the night and day that followed therefore seemingly hundreds of destitute and starving people had to undertake what for them, given their existing state of debilitation, was an extremely fatiguing journey, in very bad weather...Doolough_Tragedy ( Doolough_Tragedy ) ..I hate the flickr MAPPING TOOL..Photographer: Robert French..Collection: The Lawrence Photograph Collection ( http://catalogue.nli.ie/Collection/vtls000313414 ) ..Date: Circa 1865-1914..NLI Ref: L_ROY_00897 ( vtls000325413 ) ..You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie ( http://catalogue.nli.ie )
