Walter Mittelholzer was a Swiss aviation pioneer and photographer. He was one of the first pilots to fly in the Swiss Alps and made many flights over the mountains, taking photographs that helped to map and survey the area. He also flew in Africa and the Middle East, taking photographs and making photographs and films. He died in 1937 while on a flight over the Sudan.

The ETH-Bibliothek's collection contains about 18,000 photographs taken by Walter Mittelholzer (1894 – 1937) and Albert Heim (1849 – 1937) between 1924 and 1934.
