India in Ireland! The "Hindo Gate: Dromore, Co. Waterford"

description

Summary

The catalogue title here tells as much about the passage of time and changes in spelling, as the fantastic design of the bridge and gate tell us of the changes in power in the island. A beautiful if somewhat incongruous sight, this is much photographed and causes gasps of amazement to many of those passing it on their way along the Blackwater river valley. Hoping that you all have a good weekend!..Per the Archiseek entry ( http://archiseek.com/2013/gatelodge-to-the-former-dromana-estate-villierstown-co-waterford/ ) which our contributors highlight, a papier mache version of this "Indian Gate" was originally built in 1826 - to welcome the return of estate owners Henry Villiers-Stuart and Theresia Pauline Ott from their honeymoon. They liked it so much, the gate structure was reconstructed in stone a few years later. The wooden platform of the bridge was also rebuilt - but not until the 1970s. (Pretty much a hundred years or so after this image was captured...)...Photographers: Frederick Holland Mares, James Simonton..Contributor: John Fortune Lawrence..Collection: Stereo Pairs Photograph Collection ( http://catalogue.nli.ie/Collection/vtls000034077 ) ..Date: Catalogue range c.1860-1883..NLI Ref: STP_1785 ( vtls000565100 ) ..You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie ( http://catalogue.nli.ie )
