Kennecott Mill Town Hospital and Residential Area

description

Summary

Kennecott Mill Town - Kennecott Mines National Historic Landmark, Wrangell-St. Elias National Park & Preserve. The hospital, residential area, and assay shed were all part of the mill town that was was developed near the Kennicott Glacier following the discovery of copper ore. Mining operations expanded and declined between 1900 and 1938. During that period, a variety of structures were built to support the industrial and domestic activities of the population. Many of these still remain to provide a suggestion of life in a remote, early 20th century mining town.

The bunkhouses and assay office were built in 1910, and the hospital followed around 1916. In 1980 and 1983, the bursting of the National Creek dam reshaped the central part of the mill town and deposited large volumes of silt and debris through these three structures.
