description

Summary

Revere Sugar Refinery. The Revere Sugar Refinery began on the East Cambridge shore of the bay, west of Charlestown, on the bank of Miller's River, in 1867, in the buildings shown in this picture, which had originally served as a slaughter house providing much meat for the U.S. Army in the Mexican War in 1847. After 35 years, the refinery purchased seven acres on the Mystic River front of Charlestown, and erected a plant having a capacity of 2,000,000 lbs. a day. The Charlestown plant was completed in 1918. The Revere Sugar Refinery is a subsidiary of the United Fruit Co., who own large raw sugar properties in Cuba.
