Evidently thereforeNature does not lavish its gifts of beauty through processes ofevolution for nothing prettier can be found in highly organizedstructures than in these simple cells of the vegetable kingdom. When viewed in a living state a drop of water may showdiatoms moving about in numbers and kept free from colli-sion by some mysterious agency not yet known. It is not theliving plant, however, so much as its siliceous skeleton in aprepared state that makes it dear to the microscopist, forundoubtedly it was the attempt to make visible all the minutemarkings of the diatoms that brought about such a great im-provement in microscopic objectives. For educational purposes the use of camera and microscopepromises great future development, especially in recording themovements and growth of disease germs as shown by aid ofthe cinematograph. In this direction alone there is amplescope for original work.
