er method according to the same periodical is to usea solution consisting of water 100 c.c. (3 1-3 ozs.), potassiumiodide lo.o gms. (2^ drams) and iodine (solid) i.o gm. (15grains). This solution is more powerful than the alcohol andmust be used with some care; it is applied with a tuft ofcotton. It can also be used for cleaning up an uneven sky orremoving any portion of an image. When suitably diluted itwill remove the friction marks without attacking the image. After it has done its work the print must be placed in a plainfixing solution until the blue color has disappeared from theface and back of the print. Another and older method is to prevent the friction marksfrom developing. This can be done by adding some potassiumiodide to the developer. While this works very well, one ob-jection to its use is that it reduces the contrasts somewhat. But often this can be allowed for by using a more contrastypaper. The yellow color (silver iodide) of the print disap-pears when fully fixed. 274
