FLEWS—FOREIGN DOGS Flews.—The name given to the pendulous lips ofbloodhounds and some other breeds. Flies often cause discomfort to a sick dog, and theirpresence in a kennel is always unwelcome. They canbe kept away by placing a vessel containing a weaksolution of carbolic acid in a position out of reach of thedogs. Floors.—Of whatever materials the floors and pave-ments of kennels are made, they must be perfectly smooth ;and it is as well for cleansing purposes if they gently slope,so that the water can run off. If made of boards or brickthey are liable to absorb the moisture, which is a disadvan-tage ; but the former is the warmest of all floors, and thedifficulty referred to can be got over by covering it with alayer of coarse sawdust or peat-moss. Concrete is a verycold flooring for a kennel, though it is an excellent pavingfor exercising yards, and asphalt is preferable, though ifin use out of doors it is liable to become soft in hotweather.
