Arthur Henri Poole - The Lizard

Arthur Henri Poole - The Lizard

description

Summary

Great group shot of intending passengers and some crew aboard the Lizard, probably along the quays in Waterford. Believe that the commanding officer may have been called something like Captain Reth, but couldn't swear to it.....I'm taking a trip too, but will be back in action at the start of June! It'd be lovely to come back and find complete info on the ship; full family and career history on the Captain; all manner of gossip (however wild) about relationships between the passengers. Oh, and an exact date too, of course! Demanding, Moi? :)..Philip Ward ( 54708393@N08/ ) has contributed some great info:."The Lizard 1176 gross tons built by The Clyde Shipping Co. and launched in 1895. Sold to Turkey in 1925 and renamed Chanak-Kaleh.Scrapped in 1959."..Date: 1896?..NLI Ref.: P_WP_0971a ( P_WP_0971a )

Steam Machines, Engines, Locomotives. In 1781 James Watt patented a steam engine that produced continuous rotary motion. Watt's ten-horsepower engines enabled a wide range of manufacturing machinery to be powered. The engines could be sited anywhere that water and coal or wood fuel could be obtained. By 1883, engines that could provide 10,000 hp had become feasible. The steam engine was one of the most important technologies of the Industrial Revolution.

Images from our photo collections that show those magnificent men (and women) in their flying, choo choo-ing, and driving machines... Oh, and we've cheated, we're adding boats and ships, jaunting cars and carriages, trams too and bicycles - we're completely shameless. So, basically any form of transport - air, sea, land - with the exception of two human feet...
