Johann Georg von Dillis was born on 26 October 1759 in Gmain near Bad Reichenhall in Bavaria, Germany. Dillis first trained as a metalworker before studying painting in Munich under the famous artist Johann Georg Edlinger. Dillis was known for his picturesque landscapes, often depicting the natural beauty of the Bavarian Alps. He was particularly adept at capturing the changing moods of the mountains, from the soft pastel hues of dawn to the dramatic shadows of dusk. His paintings were characterised by their detailed and realistic depictions of nature, which reflected his deep love and appreciation of the natural world. Dillis gained recognition early in his career, receiving commissions from the Bavarian court and other prominent patrons. He also became a member of the prestigious Munich Academy of Fine Arts and served as its director from 1816 to 1820. In addition to his landscape paintings, Dillis also produced portraits and still lifes. Dillis died in Munich on 28 September 1841, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most important landscape painters of his time. His works can be found in museums and private collections around the world, including the Alte Pinakothek in Munich and the Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg.
