When the 23rd Wing Flying Tigers was re-designated the 43rd Airlift Wing, the Operations Group Commander, Colonel Gordon Ettenson, wanted a distinctive marking to replace the shark teeth of the Flying Tigers that were being removed. A World War II veteran of the then 43rd Bomb Group who attended the reactivation of the 43rd designation carried with him a leather-covered flight log from the 43rd Bomb Group, circa 1943. Embossed in leather front was a rough depiction of a gryphon (or griffin). Twenty-seven Japanese veterans from tank units stationed on the neighboring island of Saipan during World War II (WWII) came to pay respects to fallen comrades during a 60th Anniversary reunion. These veterans had family and friends stationed on Guam, and they didn't learn of their fates for years following the war. They came today with their families to place flowers, burn incense, light candles and give prayers at Tarague Beach a sight of major conflict during the war. The Japanese tank units at Tarague were the last enemy tanks on Guam and with their destruction by the United States Marine Corp (USMC) all organized resistance on Guam had ended

A US Air Force (USAF) O-2 Skymaster (right) forward air control (FAC) aircraft and a USAF A-10 Thunderbolt II close air support aircraft, sit in Heritage Park on Eielson Air Force Base (AFB), Alaska (AK). The park was dedicated on July 20, 2000 and includes 5 static aircraft, a POW/MIA memorial, a World War II (WWII) era replica of a hangar, a memorial to Ben Eielson, and a new AIRMAN's Memorial, due to open late this year. The Skymaster flew at Eielson between 1971 and 1986 as a part of the 25th Tactical Air Support Squadron (TASS).
