The Big Dipper constellation and the Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights, shine above a static A-10 Thunderbolt II in Heritage Park at Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska, on Sept. 18, 2004. The Borealis are the result of solar particles colliding with gases in Earth's atmosphere. Early Eskimos and Indians believed different legends about the Northern Lights such as they were the souls of animals dancing in the sky or the souls of fallen enemies trying to rise again. This picture of Neptune was produced from images taken through the ultraviolet, violet and green filters of the Voyager 2 wide-angle camera.  This 'false' color image has been made to show clearly details of the cloud structure and to paint clouds located at different altitudes with different colors.  Dark, deeplying clouds tend to be masked in the ultraviolet wavelength since overlying air molecules are particularly effective in scattering sunlight there which brightens the sky above them.  Such areas appear dark blue in this photo.  The Great Dark Spot (GDS) and the high southern latitudes have a deep bluish cast in this image, indication they are regions where visible light (but not ultraviolet light) may penetrate to a deeper layer of dark cloud or haze in Neptune's atmosphere.  Conversely, the pinkish clouds may be positioned at high altitudes. ARC-1989-AC89-7009

The lander is a solar-powered spacecraft designed to touch down on the Martian surface near the northern-most boundary of the south polar cap, which consists of carbon dioxide ice. The lander will study the polar water cycle, frosts, water vapor, condensates and dust in the Martian atmosphere. It is equipped with a robotic arm to dig beneath the layered terrain at the polar cap. In addition, Deep Space 2 microprobes, developed by NASA's New Millennium Program, are installed on the lander's cruise stage. After crashing into the planet's surface, they will conduct two days of soil and water experiments up to 1 meter (3 feet) below the Martian surface, testing new technologies for future planetary descent probes. The lander is the second spacecraft to be launched in a pair of Mars Surveyor '98 missions. In this lunar eclipse viewed from Merritt Island, Fla., at midnight, the full moon takes on a dark red color because it is being lighted slightly by sunlight passing through the Earth's atmosphere. This light has the blue component preferentially scattered out (this is also why the sky appears blue from the surface of the Earth), leaving faint reddish light to illuminate the Moon during the eclipse. Initial contact came through an antenna at the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency's Uchinoura Space Center in southern Japan. Mars is 72 million miles from Earth today, but the spacecraft will travel more than four times that distance on its outbound-arc trajectory to intercept the red planet on March 10, 2006. The orbiter carries six scientific instruments for examining the surface, atmosphere and subsurface of Mars in unprecedented detail from low orbit. NASA expects to get several times more data about Mars from MRO than from all previous Martian missions combined. Researchers will use the instruments to learn more about the history and distribution of Mars' water. That information will improve understanding of planetary climate change and will help guide the quest to answer whether Mars ever supported life. KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- A worker releases a weather balloon at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station weather station. The balloon is equipped with a radiosonde, an instrument that transmits measurements on atmospheric pressure, humidity, temperature and winds as it ascends. The data will be used to determine if conditions are acceptable for the launch of NASA's THEMIS mission. THEMIS, an acronym for Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms, consists of five identical probes that will track violent, colorful eruptions near the North Pole.  This will be the largest number of scientific satellites NASA has ever launched into orbit aboard a single rocket.  The THEMIS mission aims to unravel the mystery behind auroral substorms, an avalanche of magnetic energy powered by the solar wind that intensifies the northern and southern lights.  The mission will investigate what causes auroras in the Earth’s atmosphere to dramatically change from slowly shimmering waves of light to wildly shifting streaks of bright color.
