Independent union member tells of NLRB's refusal to certify gas workers' organization. Washington, D.C., July 5. Joseph C. Nash, member of the Independent Gas Workers' Union, organized at the Brooklyn Union Gas Co. in New York, described today to the Senate Education and Labor Committee the attempts of his organization to obtain certification from the NLRB, although a petition for certification was filed over a year ago. The board's refusal to grant the petition, he said, could be blamed upon its 'pro- C.I.O. bias.' Senator Allen Ellender read into the record a letter from the union's attorney stating that Nash did not speak for the union, but represented solely himself

Sen. Taft returns for Congressional opening. Washington, D.C., Jan. 2. Back from a swing around the country on which he said he learned that 'sentiment against the New Deal is constantly rising,' Senator Robert A. Taft, Republican of Ohio, today told reporters the neutrality zone policy 'tends to involve us in disputes with other nations that might conceivably lead to war.' He added that attempts by the U.S. and other American countries to enforce a security zone around North and South American are perfectly indefensible and ridiculous

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- At Launch Pad 39A, a United Space Alliance technician removes foam insulation revealing the fastener holes on the covers over the feed-through connector box on the external tank for space shuttle Atlantis' STS-122 mission. The covers will be removed for access to the feed-through connectors. Following the failure of some of the tank's engine cutoff sensors, or ECO sensors, during propellant tanking for launch attempts on Dec. 6 and Dec. 9, a tanking test was conducted on Dec. 18 to aid in troubleshooting the cause. Technicians spliced test wiring into the ECO sensor electrical system and used time domain reflectometry equipment to help locate the electrical anomaly. Results of the tanking test pointed to an open circuit in the feed-through connector wiring, which is located at the base of the tank. The feed-through connector passes the wires from the inside of the tank to the outside. During the holiday period, workers from Lockheed Martin will begin inspecting and testing the connector. Shuttle program managers will meet on Dec. 27 to review the test and analysis, and decide on a forward plan. Photo credit: NASA/Kim Shiflett KSC-07pd3656
