Panay hero receives Navy Cross. Washington, D.C., July 1. Fireman first class John L. Hodge, who is recuperating at Naval Hospital here, was today decorated with the Navy Cross for the bravery he displayed during the sinking of the U.S. gunboat Panay by Japanese bombs last year. Monroe, USA, (right), the Adjutant General and Commander of the California National Guard, and United States Representative Anna G. Eshoo, of the 14th Congressional District, California. Rep. Eshoo was instrumental in the effort to award LT Sciaroni the Bronze Star for his actions during WWII. LT Sciaroni was a navigator on a B-24 shot down over Germany, he lead three of his fellow aircrew members to safety after more than two weeks behind enemy lines.
