Group showing most of the youngsters working in the Cowpen's Manufacturing Co., S.C. They are all regular workers including shorty the smallest one. The boy next to him was dragged out of the photograph against his will soon after by an anxious parent. Superintendent was very suspicious and accused me of being the one who made so much trouble for the mill people several years ago. He finally permitted some outside photographs only saying, "We have certificates for all these children."  Location: [Cowpens], South Carolina.

Photo of Ordinary's Certificate for Bronson Beers, 9 years old, (and therefore illegal). The Deputy Clerk told me "That was likely a clerical error." but I found five of these "errors" issued to children under 10 years old, one for child aged 8. (The latter was later marked 'Void' but none of the rest were.[)] Rolly's teacher told me the family had moved, but that the boy was a mere baby with a lisp. The issuing of the certificates is very unbusinesslike. (See Vaughn's report, Georgia, 1913.) The Ordinary said, "I'm a practical Man! The cotton mill people are the poorest paid workers in the country. They have to put their children into the mills."  Location: Columbus, Georgia.

Certificates of individual production merit awards. Stanley Crawford, 50-year old group leader in the internal inspection department at RCA Manufacturing Co., Camden, New Jersey has been awarded a Certificate of Individual Production Merit. He came to RCA in 1928 as a packer in the shipping department. He has been an inspector since 1940. Crawford suggested and designed a caliper for determining the wall thickness and relationship between a cored interior and outside surface of castings. The use of the caliper saved 13 out of 16 castings which had been rejected. It saved skilled man hours and material

Warne, acting chief of War Production Drive Headquarters in Washington. Feiner, 50-year old American citizen of Polish birth, devised an elbow-edging machine which tripled the production of elbows at the Bethlehem Steel Company's shipbuilding division.
