America's petroleum industries pour out fuel and lubricants for the United Nations. Railroad cars stand on a side track ready to receive cargoes of gasoline stored in large spherical tanks at the refinery of one of the principal U.S. oil companies. The cars will speed the gasoline across the American continent to seaports where it will be loaded onto tanker ships for conveyance overseas to the armed forces of the United Nations. Gasoline totals have reached new records since the U.S. entered the war. Besides the enormous amounts required to fuel the 180,000 planes American factories have turned out since December 7, 1941, large supplies of fuel are needed for naval vessels, merchant ships, tanks and mechanized units in the field. It takes 25,000 gallons of gasoline to move a single U.S. Army tank division 100 miles (160 kilometers)

America's petroleum industries pour out fuel and lubricants for the United Nations. These three new catalytic oil "cracking" units are turning out gasoline for the new machines of war at the plant of a large U.S. refining company in the southern U.S. state of Louisiana. In the eight years of the development of the "cracking" process in producing gasoline, it is estimated that 1,000,000,000 barrels of crude oil have been saved by the oil industry. The "cracking" process subjects crude oil to heat and pressure by which the oil molecules are broken down and made to release more of their derivable elements. The drain of war on such gasoline producing units as these is shown by the fact that the U.S. has manufactured 180,000 planes since December 7, 1941, propelled by gasoline motors. For example, one U.S. Liberator four-motored bomber in a six-hour bombing run consumes 1,800 gallons of gasoline, enough to last the average U.S. civilian motorist from three to five years

America's petroleum industries pour out fuel and lubricants for the United Nations. A large pipeline valve controls a pipe leading from storage tanks on shore to fuel tanks of a U.S. merchant ship. This oil dock is in a U.S. Atlantic coast seaport at which oil in large quantities is continually being transhipped for war purposes. The equipment belongs to on the the principal U.S. oil companies working at peak capacity to supply the Navy's mechanized equipment and warplanes of the United Nations. The amount of gasoline needed alone for the 180,000 planes manufactured by the U.S. since December 7, 1941 is indicated by the fact that to train one flyer pilot requires 12,500 gallons of gasoline, enough to last the average U.S. civilian motorist a lifetime

America's petroleum industries pour out fuel and lubricants for the United Nations. Men at the wheels of large valves regulate the flow of oil into oil tankers at a U.S. Atlantic coast seaport. The oil, flowing from large storage tanks on the dock, is being transhipped to the armed forces of the U.S. and other of the United Nation. Through valves like these pour the derivative products of some of the 1,601,250,000 barrels of oil which the U.S. oil industry will produce this year. The fact that a U.S. Liberator four-motored bomber consumes 1,800 gallons of gasoline in one six-hour bombing run, enough to supply the average citizen motorist with fuel for four or five years of motoring, indicates the heavy volume of oil supplies required in the modern war

Now that the Rotating Service Structure is rolled back, one of the final prelaunch milestones will be the loading of the external tank with approximately 500,000 gallons of liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen to fuel the three main engines. STS-86 is slated to be the seventh docking of the Space Shuttle with the Russian Space Station Mir. Liftoff is targeted for Sept. 25 at 10:34 p.m. EDT during a preferred launch window which lasts six minutes and 45 seconds. Seven crew members will lift off for the scheduled 10-day flight. One of those crew members, David A. Wolf, will transfer to the Mir for an approximate four-month stay. He will replace U.S. astronaut C. Michael Foale, who will return to Earth with the remainder of the STS-86 crew. Foale has been on the Russian space station since mid-May KSC-97PC1417

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- With the Rotating Service Structure (RSS) rolled back, at left, the Space Shuttle Columbia is nearly ready for launch of STS-90. Rollback of the RSS is a major preflight milestone, typically occurring during the T-11-hour hold on L-1 (the day before launch). The scheduled launch of Columbia on Apr. 16 from Launch Pad 39B was postponed 24 hours due to difficulty with network signal processor No. 2 on the orbiter. This device formats data and voice communications between the ground and the Space Shuttle. The unit, which is located in the orbiter's mid-deck, will be removed and replaced. Prior to launch, one of the final steps will be to load the external tank with approximately 500,000 gallons of liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen for fueling the orbiters three main engines. Tanking had not yet begun when the launch scheduled for Apr. 16 was scrubbed. STS-90 is slated to be the launch of Neurolab, a nearly 17-day mission to examine the effects of spaceflight on the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves and sensory organs in the human body KSC-98pc483
