Louis Birch, 4th & Pine Sts. Newsboy, 12 years of age. Just started selling. Made 10 cents one day. Father dead. While not under any compulsion to sell papers, Louis, of his own accord, took it up in order to help support his widowed mother. Louis is a brother of Stanley Birch, whose full history is contained in the text of the general report. Louis stays out until 12:30 every night and goes with his brother, Stanley, who is a messenger, on all calls because Stanley is afraid to be out on the street alone at night. Louis is clean, bright and willing. Visits saloons. Don't smoke. Works 9 hours per day. Gives money to mother. , May 1910. Investigator, Edward F. Brown. Comparison of Baptisimal Record and Age Certificate of Stanley Letuvinak (American name, Thomas Long). Born according to baptismal record May 10, 1897; date of birth given in age certificate was June 10, 1893, in order to make him 14 years of age. He was killed by falling from a breaker at Wanamie, Pa., when only 10 years of age. The Coroner's Jury, said in its report, "We find said company not responsible for the accident as they held affidavit from his father that he was 14 and the boy was away from his work when the accident occurred." Dotheboys Hall in session tucked away upstairs over the store. Equipped with antique, dilapidated benches and chairs. The lessons begin at 6 A.M. and last for six hours, and these children who attend in the morning go into the mill in the afternoon and vice versa for the required eight weeks, which the law specifies. Taking everything into consideration it shows what travesty vocational guidance may become, and is in itself the best example of Dotheboys Hall I have ever seen, except that it is not half so practical as was Squeer's school. A large proportion of the girls here came from the farms, their lives stunted by the monotonous work of cotton picking, many of them beginning at five and six years old.
