A fifteen year old boy operating a dangerous boring machine at which he said a boy recently bored half his hand off. To operate this machine (which bores a large hole in the spade handle) the boy has to throw his whole weight onto the lever which pushes the handle (and himself) up against the unprotected borer. A slip might easily result fatally. Boy earns $1.65 a day. This factory has a number of unprotected belts and dangerous machines. One other boy, about the age of this one, was doing all kinds of work, taking away the handles from a huge rip saw, etc., and constantly exposed to danger. Pittman Handle Factory. Sanford Cotton Mill. Accident case. Carl Thornburg a 12 year old boy who went to work at 11. A few weeks ago he caught his arm in the "lapper" machine, and broke it in 2 places. He said: "I sure didn't mean to. Was jus goin through the lapper room an fust thing I knew everything went black." The family is hard-up. Father is a paralytic. Here is a real chance for a mill to do a benevolent deed by making some recompense to this crippled boy and his paralytic father. They think it's charity to give a boy work under legal age, but when he is injured they forget that side of it. No suggestion of any kind of recompense has been heard. Jim Browning said he was 12 years old, but that is doubtful. Has worked 6 months here; gets 50 cents a day. Is in the 2nd grade at school. Location: Sanford, North Carolina.

Bureau of Standards breaks up plates for a reason. Washington, D.C., May 23. Just about everything manufactured in this country is made the subject of tests in the Bureau of Standards here. Even the dinner plates used in restaurants go through a series of tests in order that the government may known just how long it can expect them to last in usage. R.F. Galler, Chief of the White Wear section, is here operating an impact machine to determine the amount of force necessary to cause those germ-concealing chips in a plate. Previous in this test, the plate is ground with porcelain to find out how long a plate may be handled before it loses its gleam, and samples are heated to find out how much heat is necessary to cause cracks to appear in the glazing
