Freezing of Japan's credits may popularize cotton stockings for milady. Washington, D.C., July 26. It appears that the U.S. Department of Agriculture's efforts to improve cotton stockings and thereby popularize the wearing of them as a means of disposing of surplus long-staple cotton, will bear fruit now that Japan's assets have been frozen in the U.S. Japan furnishes most of the silk used in the stockings manufactured in this country and at the present time, according to reports, there is only about two and a half month's supply left. Trade between the U.S. and Japan no doubt will be hard hit because of the difficulty of making payments. Nylon production is also slow so the ladies will probably be wearing cotton stockings by the end of the year or else go barelegged. In this picture, David H. Young, Agriculture Department fabric technician, is shown examining one of the cotton stockings which they are trying to popularize

Warns U.S. of crop shortage, Washington, D.C. Aug. 12. The country will be faced with the worst crop shortage in years during 1936, according to Joseph A. Becker, chairman of the crop reporting board of the Department of Agriculture. Shortage of corn will be the worst since 1881 and potatoes will also be scarce. Becker's potato chart shows a decrease of the million bushels planted in 1936 compared to the production in 1925, which was also a lean year. This means you eaters who number spuds among your favorite dishes, will have to be content with 2.7 bushels per person this year

Movie star before senate committee. Washington, D.C., April 3. The S.R.O. sign was hung out today at the Senate Interstate Commerce Committee Hearing as Robert Montgomery, movie star, appeared to express his opposition to a bill designed to prohibit "Block booking" and "Blind selling" two trade practices which curb the discretion that a movie house owner has in selecting pictures to be shown in his community. Speaking as a former President of the Screen Actors Guild, Montgomery told the Committee that the Guild and their lawyers have come to the very definite conclusion that if the bill should become a law it would cut in half the production schedules of the Motion Picture Industry. 4-3- 39

Salinas Valley, California. Large scale, commercial agriculture. This single California county (Monterey) shipped 20,096 carlots of lettuce in 1934, or forty-five percent of all carlot shipments in the United States. In the same year 73.8 percent of all United States carlot shipments were made from Monterey County, Imperial Valley, California (7,797 carlots) and Maricopa County, Arizona (4,697). Production of lettuce is largely in the hands of a comparatively small number of grower-shippers, many of whom operate in two or all three of these Counties. Labor is principally Mexican and Filipino in the fields, and white American in the packing sheds. Many workers follow the harvests from one valley to the other, since plantings are staggered to maintain a fairly even flow of lettuce to the Eastern markt throughout the year
