The sanitary conditions in most of these homes are pretty good, but some times filthy rooms are found and often tuberculosis with the work still going on. Mrs. Civarro with her three-months-old baby in her arms is working with four children aged 10, 9, 7 and 5, and a younger child that does not work (2 years). They work irregularly (as Mrs. Civarro does the janitor work for the building which is in fair condition, and receives in return only the rent free of three small rooms), and their net income for this work is $2 a week. 8 members of the family sleep in one small inner room. Civarro family, 2106 Second Avenue, second floor back, working on patriotic flag pins. They get 3 cents a gross for inserting pin and putting onto card. Mrs. Civarro with her three-months-old baby in her arms is working with four children aged 10, 9, 7 and 5, and a younger child that does not work (2 years). They work irregularly (as Mrs. Civarro does the janitor work for the building which is in fair condition, and receives in return only the rent free of three small rooms), and their net income for this work is $2 a week. 8 members of the family sleep in one small inner room. At the headquarters of the distributing Service of the American Red Cross in famous Hanover Square, London. One of the packing rooms. The room is filled with silent groups of energetic workers, all dressed in clean white uniforms. They bend over the their tables unpacking, sorting, bandages, gauze, operating jackets, hospital garments, surgical supplies of all kinds, seem to bring this work very near the front. A woman who visited the Depot recently wrote afterward to the committee "personnally I had no idea that bandages could be so attractive or so fascinating"

Amer. Nurses on the porch of their Red Cross Club house on the banks of the River Test, Somewhere-in-England. "I don't know why they should call it a river," the newly arrived nurse invariably remarks, for is seems too small to be dignified by any name more ambitious than "creek", but they learn to like as they grow more familiar with it. The Nurses' Club, built up close to the Amer. Hospital, is an unpretentious little building of cottage type, but cozy and comfortable, with pleasant dining rooms and lounge rooms and reading rooms and a few bed rooms. The front yard is full of holly, which the nurses have been tending carefully in anticipation of using it at Christmas time

"Stratford Lodge" is the headquarters of the American Red Cross at the big American Base Hospital at Portsmouth England. The "Lodge" is not only business headquarters, but is also a club-house for the convalescent patients, and scores of them use it every day.
