Electrical cooperatives. The wholesale power of the Authority is distributed among rural consumers by cooperatives formed and managed by the farmers. The headquarters buildings of the cooperatives, usually located in small towns or in open country, are for many of the local residents the first contact with modern construction, architecture and interior appointments, as well as with electrical power and modern business methods. The buildings contain reception rooms, which also accommodate the display of appliances; offices; garages; warehouses; and meeting rooms, usually in the second story. They are built within strict cost limitations and perform a much needed service as clubs or minor cultural centers for the rural population. This one is located at Murfreesburo, Tennessee

Civilian protection. Fully equipped to cope with any situation they may encounter these New York City volunteer auxiliary firemen put on a demonstration of the matter in which they would handle the damage caused by an incendiary bombing attack. An incendiary bomb has fallen through the roof of this building and is blazing in the second story. One worker has already entered through the window and is using an "Indian" fire pump on the small blaze which has started. His fellow workers are following up the ladder equipped (from top to bottom) with the following items: top man carries a portable acetylene torch used to cut through metal to effect entrance or to extricate occupants caught under fallen beams or pipes; the next man carries a roof rope, while the man at the bottom bears a two-way portable radio. All workers are supplied with gas masks

Bantam, Connecticut. Bantam is hoping eventually to get a new post office and town hall. The town burgesses meet above the post office, while the rest of the second story here is given over to a little-used basketball court. Postmaster Edward M. Doyle, who is not related to James L. Doyle, the town warden, has run out of defense stamps more than once, for Bantam is buying bonds and stamps in large quantities. The volume at the post office has risen considerably in the eight years Doyle has been in charge, his own salary going from sixteen hundred to twenty-one hundred annually in that time. He's especially proud of the consistently excellent ratings his premises are given by government inspectors
