Rep. Bloom presents sculptress with check from anonymous New Yorker to save home. Washington, D.C., Nov. 18. Early this week a reporter on a local paper discovered that Adelaide Johnson, sculptress, who created the Susan B. Anthony Sufferagist Group in the U.S. Capitol, was about to be evicted from her bare house. She had no means of moving several busts and statues which she had in the house and had set about destroying them. The matter was called to the attention of Rep. Sol Bloom of New York who investigated. An anonymous woman in New York sent a thousand dollars, and other amounts brought the total up to almost $2,000. Rep. Bloom arranged a suitable agreement with the realty company, and now Miss Johnson, shown here receiving the check, will be allowed to stay and continue her work. In the background is a bust of Susan B. Anthony

Group of boys who work in Suncock (N. H.) Mills. It is a large corporation, employing 1200 hands, but in all the three mills, I found only 1 girl and three boys that seemed to be under 14. Unusual conditions for a large N.H. Mill. Sanitary conditions here are exceptionally good, for this section. I investigated all three mills freely and was unknown and usually unattended by anyone. Location: Suncock, New Hampshire.

Marie and Albert Kawalski. 615 S. Band St., Baltimore, Md. Albert is 10 and Marie 11 years old. They worked, with mother, last winter, shucking oysters for Varn & Beard Packing Co., Young Island, S.C. (near Charleston). Mrs. Kawalski did not have things represented to her correctly and she found that all the children that had fare paid were compelled to work for the company. Other smaller children worked some and went to school some. Maire and Albert have worked several summers in the berry, beans and tomato fields packing houses near Baltimore. (see my report, July 10, for further [particulars]). Location: Baltimore, Maryland.

Millie, 13 years old last summer. Ignatio, 9 years old last summer. Jo, 6 years old last summer. Paresse Family, 4 Fly St., Buffalo, N.Y. All three worked in the Albion Canning Factory in the sheds (Jo, only a little) on peas, beans and corn. Jo was too small to get husks off the corn so they stopped his working. Millie and Ignatio made 40 to 50 cents a day each, at 8 cents and hour because the work was slack. Returned to Buffalo the last of October. Went out the last of May, losing about 11 weeks of school time. Millie would not go to school when she came back because she was behind the rest of the class. Was found out by the C.O.S. in January and was reported to truant officer and sent to school. Location: Buffalo, New York (State)
