A switchboard operator, on reach-ing the fifth step from the bottom ofthe stairs without holding on to thehand rail, caught the heel of her shoein the hem of her skirt and fell to thebottom of the stairs. She receiveda scalp wound above her ear and awrenched shoulder, necessitating fourweeks absence. Two repairmen driving to a jobfollowing a severe wind storm agreed that On every job today, we willwear rubber gloves. They parkedtheir truck and proceeded to checkfor a broken telephone drop wire. One repairman said here it is, andtook hold of a wire which was hang-ing low over some brush. That wasa fatal error, for he had mistaken a2,300-volt power wire for the tele-phone drop wire. Two pairs of rub-ber gloves were on the truck, and 1951-52 Bell System Safety Record 215 had not been used that morning byeither employee. These cases illustrate accidentsthat would have been avoided if em-ployees had kept alert and followedthe ordinary, well understood, andgenerally accepted safe practicesth
