Brown bear, Denali National Park and Preserve, 2015.
Summary
Brown bears and grizzly bears may have striking visible differences between them but they are listed as the same species (Ursus arctos). Grizzly bears include any North American subspecies of brown bear, including mainland grizzly (U. a. horribilis) and Kodiak (U. .a middendorffi) as well as two recently-extinct California (U. a. californicus) and Mexican (U. a. nelsoni) grizzly bears. Scientists refer to these animals as the North American brown bear, not the grizzly bear.
