SHIMODA, Japan (Apr. 13, 2012) Capt. John Swanson, chaplain of Commander, Naval Forces Japan, Commander, Navy Region Japan; leads a prayer for the remains of three U.S. Sailors and two U.S Marines from Commodore Matthew Perry's squadron who died in Japan during the 1850s, and whose remains are interred on the temple grounds. The Gyokusenji Temple served as the first consulate for the United States in Japan opened on September 4, 1856 with Townsend Harris as first Consul General to Japan.
