The Pine Ridge Agency is a former U.S. government agency responsible for the administration of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. The reservation is home to the Oglala Sioux Tribe and is one of the largest Indian reservations in the United States. The Pine Ridge Agency was established in 1878 and was responsible for overseeing the implementation of federal policies and programs for the benefit of the Oglala Sioux people. It was abolished in the 1930s as part of a broader effort to transfer responsibility for Indian affairs from the federal government to individual tribes. Today, the Oglala Sioux Tribe is a sovereign nation and manages its own affairs, including the administration of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.
