Communications exercise

description

Summary

Capt. DeAngelo V. Brown (right), the 65th Medical Brigade communications officer, fields questions from South Korean army signal school staff during a class on friendly-force tracking technology. Signaleers from the American and South Korean armies gathered Jan. 28, 2015, at Yongsan Garrison, South Korea to strengthen existing relationships and share information during a training exercise. Part of the semi-annual Theater Signal Exercise included briefings, demonstrations and a question-and-answer session on friendly-force tracking and other computer networking systems. Friendly-force tracking, a task often conducted on a system known as Blue Force Tracker, allows viewers with permission to see the locations of military elements that carry a signaling device in near real time that is displayed on a digital map. "Blue Force Tracker has evolved since the days when it was a radio based system to the current satellite based system with global coverage,” said Brig. Gen. Park Sun-sang, commander of the South Korean army’s signal school. As a result of the changes to Blue Force Tracker and other technologies, both the Korean and American militaries believe sharing information is mutual benefit. "These kinds of partnership events enable us to understand differences in technologies and doctrine between our armies and work towards strategies to develop effective bridges," said U.S. Army Capt. Natasha Mercado, a communication operations officer serving in 8th Army.
