Conversion. Toy factory. Lucille Ciecko is one of the thousands of workers turning their skill today to the production of vital parts of Uncle Sam's war machine. Here she is shown at her peacetime work, drilling castings for toy locomotives in a large Eastern plant. Today she uses the same press, with different drills, to make the holes in parachute flare casings through which wires are inserted. A. C. Gilbert Company, New Haven, Connecticut

Conversion. Toy factory. Stephanie Cewe and Ann Manemeit, have turned their skill from peacetime production of toy trains to the assembly of parachute flare casings for the armies of democracy. Along with other workers in this Eastern plant, they have turned their skill to the vital needs of the day, and in many cases have seen to it that the machinery they used to use does Uncle Sam's most important work today. Here, they are assembling parachute flare casings, using the same electric screwdrivers they formerly used to assemble the locomotives of toy trains. A. C. Gilbert Company, New Haven, Connecticut

Women in industry. Aircraft motor workers. Employer resistance to the hiring of women workers in war industries is rapidly becoming a thing of the past, and this young employee of a Midwest aircraft motor plant embodies the reasons for this change of heart. With no previous industrial experience, she mastered the operation of this compressed-air machine in record time, and is now polishing airplane motor parts with speed and skill

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- STS-120 Mission Specialist Stephanie Wilson is helped with her boot during suitup for a simulated launch countdown, part of the prelaunch terminal countdown demonstration test, or TCDT. Her name patch reflects the nicknames the crew gave each other for the event. The TCDT provides astronauts and ground crews an opportunity to participate in various launch preparation activities, including equipment familiarization, emergency training and the simulated countdown. The STS-120 mission will deliver the U.S. Node 2 module, named Harmony, aboard space shuttle Discovery to the International Space Station. Launch of Discovery on mission STS-120 is targeted for Oct. 23 at 11:38 a.m. EDT on a 14-day mission. Photo credit: NASA/Kim Shiflett KSC-07pd2768
