Summary
Op de voorgrond links de personificatie Geduld (Patientia), omringd door wapentuig. Ze houdt het kruis vast en het Lam Gods zit op haar schoot. Naast haar ligt een bijbel. Ze heeft haar ogen ten hemel gericht, naar het tetragram van God. Rechts op de voorgrond Armoede (Paupertas). Hij is gekleed als een kreupele bedelaar en jaagt kwajongens weg met zijn staf. Op de achtergrond de verschrikkingen van de Tachtigjarige Oorlog. Links de Spaanse Furie van 1576, toen Antwerpen door Spaanse soldaten werd geplunderd en het stadhuis in brand werd gestoken. Rechts de roofovervallen van Spaanse troepen op het Brabantse platteland. De afbeelding kan geïnterpreteerd worden als een verzoek standvastig in het (protestants) geloof te zijn en geduldig de tijd af te wachten, ondanks de tegenslagen en de armoede die de oorlog teweegbrengt. De prent heeft een Latijns, Frans en Nederlands onderschrift in verzen. De verzen veroordelen armoede en sporen aan tot vlijt en arbeid. Wel wordt een uitzondering gemaakt voor armoede ten tijde van oorlog.
Since the 16th century, Dutch artists used prints to promote their art and access a wider public than what was possible for a single painting. During the Dutch Golden Age, (17th century), Dutch artists perfected the techniques of etching and engraving. The rise of printmaking in the Netherlands is attributed to a connection between Italy and the Netherlands during the 1500s. Together with the large-scale production, it allowed the expanding reach of an artist’s work. Prints were popular as collecting items, so publishing houses commissioned artists to create a drawing or a painting, and then print the work for collectors - similar to what occurs at publishing houses today. Dutch printmaking evolved rapidly, so in 16th-century etching prevailed over the engraving.
