description

Summary

Vermont stereoscopic card.

Robert Dennis's stereographs collection includes more than 72,000 stereoscopic views organized primarily by geography. The collection bears the name of the native New Yorker who assembled it over a period of more than six decades, Robert N. Dennis (1900-1983).

Stereographs consist of two nearly identical photographs or photomechanical prints, paired to produce the illusion of a single three-dimensional image, usually when viewed through a stereoscope. Stereographs were produced from the 1850s to the 1940s, with the bulk between 1870 and 1920.

Adin French began his career as a portrait painter before turning to photography in the 1850s. He opened his first photographic studio in San Francisco in 1862 and quickly gained a reputation for the quality of his work. In the 1870s, Styles began to focus more on landscape photography, capturing images of Yosemite Valley, the Sierra Nevada Mountains and other natural wonders of the American West. He was one of the first photographers to capture the beauty of these areas and helped popularise them as tourist destinations. Styles also continued to take portraits throughout his career, including images of prominent figures such as Mark Twain and John Muir. In addition to his work as a photographer, Styles was also an inventor and held several patents related to photographic equipment. He died in 1910 at the age of 78.
