Guerra del pacífico 1879-1884 Caricatura 12

description

Summary

Spanish historian Patricio Ibarra Cifuentes writes: 'Father Cobos and his inseparable comrade “El negro” laugh out loud when they observe how the Peruvian leaders Andrés Avelino Cáceres, Lizardo Montero, Nicolás de Piérola and Mariano Ignacio Prado, look forward to the arrival of troops and ships from the United States to free them of the Chilean yoke, in an attitude similar to that of Jews who want the early appearance of their Messiah. This cartoon, a scathing criticism of the intervention in favor of Peru by the US Secretary of State James G. Blaine and the diplomat Stephen Augustus Hurlbut, was published in El Padre Cobos on December 13, 1881.
