Summary
Standbeeld van Hercules, bekend onder de naam Hercules van Farnese. Hercules, gespierd en zwaargebouwd, staat naakt in een nis en leunt op zijn knots. De leeuwenhuid hangt over de knots. Het standbeeld werd in de derde eeuw na Christus uit marmer gehouwen naar een antiek beeldhouwwerk van Glycon en staat momenteel in Nationaal Archeologisch Museum van Napels. Voordien stond het in Palazzo Farnese, van waar het zijn naam kreeg. Op een rotsblok naast Hercules enkele woorden in het Grieks.De prent heeft een Latijns onderschrift.
Printmaking in woodcut and engraving came to Northern Italy within a few decades of their invention north of the Alps. Engraving probably came first to Florence in the 1440s, the goldsmith Maso Finiguerra (1426–64) used the technique. Italian engraving caught the very early Renaissance, 1460–1490. Print copying was a widely accepted practice, as well as copying of paintings viewed as images in their own right.
