subdivided into lobes and lobules, the sliape and numberof which cannot be readily determined. They are termed right andleft^ respectively, according to the side of the cavity of the chest whichthey occupy. The former consists of three Fig. 78. lobes; the latter of two.Each of these exactlyfills the correspondingcavity of the pleura;and they are separatedfrom each other by aduplicature of thepleura — (the serousmembrane that linesthe chest, and is re-flected over the lungs)—and by the heart.The colour of the lungsis generally of a marbleblue; and the exterioris furrowed by figuresof hexagonal shape.The appearance is not,however, the same atall ages, and under allcircumstances. In in-fancy, they are of apale red; in youth, ofa darker colour; andin old age, of a lividblue. The elements thatcompose them are ;—the ramifications of thetrachea; those of thepulmonary artery andpulmonary veins, be-sides the organic ele-ments, that appertainto every living struc-ture,—arteries, veins.
