description

Summary

201112-N-LW757-1023

SAN DIEGO (Nov. 12, 2020) Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class Austin Domenech, an interventional radiology (IR) technologist assigned to Naval Medical Center San Diego's (NMCSD) Radiology Department, prepares an operating room for an IR procedure Nov. 12. IR utilizes medical imaging to guide minimally-invasive procedures. Every year, National Radiologic Technology Week is celebrated beginning Nov. 8. The weekly celebration commemorates the discovery of the X-ray by Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen on Nov. 8, 1895. The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has changed the way many facets of healthcare are conducted, and NMCSD's Radiology Department has adapted some of its techniques and practices to keep both staff and patients safe while delivering the high-quality healthcare they’ve come to expect. NMCSD’s mission is to prepare service members to deploy in support of operational forces, deliver high quality healthcare services and shape the future of military medicine through education, training and research. NMCSD employs more than 6,000 active duty military personnel, civilians, and contractors in Southern California to provide patients with world-class care anytime, anywhere. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - In Orbiter Processing Facility 1 at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, United Space Alliance technicians, lying on a work platform, remove window #8 from the top of the crew module of space shuttle Atlantis. Inspection and maintenance of the crew module windows is standard procedure between shuttle missions. Atlantis is next slated to deliver an Integrated Cargo Carrier and Russian-built Mini Research Module to the International Space Station on the STS-132 mission. The second in a series of new pressurized components for Russia, the module will be permanently attached to the Zarya module. Three spacewalks are planned to store spare components outside the station, including six spare batteries, a boom assembly for the Ku-band antenna and spares for the Canadian Dextre robotic arm extension. A radiator, airlock and European robotic arm for the Russian Multi-purpose Laboratory Module also are payloads on the flight. Launch is targeted for May 14.
