Robert Jefferson Bingham was born in England in 1824. He began his career as a photographer in the mid-1850s, working in Paris and other cities in France. He quickly gained a reputation for his skill and creativity, and his work was widely admired. Bingham's photographs were characterised by sharp focus, careful composition and attention to detail. He was particularly adept at capturing the texture and tone of different materials such as fabrics, metals and wood. His portraits were notable for their sensitivity and realism, and he was able to capture the character and personality of his subjects with great accuracy. Bingham was also an innovator in the field of photography. He was one of the first photographers to experiment with colour photography and developed several techniques to produce colour images using different chemicals and processes. He also pioneered the use of photographic negatives as a means of reproducing images, greatly expanding the possibilities of the medium. Despite his success in France, Bingham returned to England in the late 1860s, where he continued to work as a photographer until his death in 1870. His legacy lives on in the many photographs he produced throughout his career, which remain a testament to his skill and creativity as a pioneer of photography.
