The bodhisattva Lokeshvara, sculpture collection Rijksmuseum
Summary
This head was found near the western gate of the walled city of Angkor Thom. In the late 12th century the bodhisattva Lokeshvara was particularly revered there. The head’s distinctive expression, with closed eyes and a blissful smile, is typical of figures from this period of Cambodian art.
