Before you can hope to bring about the great and last-ing glory of this republic, you must make every man within itsboundaries free. You must emancipate all the slaves by your pen,and your armies must indorse your action with the sword. On September 22, 1862. he signed the proclamation, makingthe slaves free men. As Col. Kase concluded his story he lookedat the reporter steadily, and raising his right hand, said with greatsolemnity, As there is a God in Heaven, all that I have told youis true. As the spirit communicating did not send in his cardor announce his name, and the question arose as to who it might be,some one present seeing the portrait of Daniel Webster suggestedthat it might be his spirit, and it was at once decided that it was. I think it more likely to have been the spirit of the negropirate, Wansley, who with the pirate Gibbs, was hanged on gibbet,now Bedloes Island, in New York Bav.

54 Daniel Webster, while living, once said, in speaking of aboli-tionists, that he never knew one who did not have a screw loosesomewhere in his intellectual or moral machinery.
