T hi: C U B A R i: V I E \v THE CULTIVATION OF COFFEE IN CUBA From a Report of the U. S. Department of Commerce. At one time in its history, Cuba was a greal coffee-producing country and shipped more coffee annually than the Island of Java. The high tid ' exportation was reached when 22,956,575 pounds were exported. There were al thai time more than 1,600 coffee "fineas," or farms, on the Island, and all the coffee consumed In Cuba came from its soil.

The existing government, however, taxed the industry until there was little profit left in it, the tax being advanced until it was 7 cents a pound in the hands of the grower.
