Joseph Collier began his career as a photographer in the early 1860s, working for Mathew Brady in New York City. In 1866 he moved to San Francisco and opened his own photographic studio. He quickly gained a reputation as a skilled photographer and began to receive commissions from wealthy clients. In 1868 Collier travelled to Yosemite Valley for the first time, where he was struck by the natural beauty of the landscape. He returned to Yosemite several times over the next few years to photograph the valley and its surroundings. Collier's photographs of Yosemite were some of the first to capture the majesty and grandeur of the landscape. His images of Yosemite Falls, Half Dome and El Capitan became iconic images of the American West. In addition to his work in Yosemite, Collier photographed other locations in California, Oregon and Washington. He continued to work as a photographer until his death in 1910. Today, Joseph Collier's photographs are in the collections of the Library of Congress, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and other institutions. His images continue to inspire photographers and nature lovers alike.
