This boat with a special receiving was left by scientists of the U.S. Geological Survey in a trip through the Grand Canyon of Colo. in 1923. This set with the oars as an aerial picked up news of the death of Pres. Harding three-quarters of an hour after his death. This was quite some feat considering the set was 3,000 ft. below sea level i.e. not below sea level but below surrounding land mass and 100 degrees in the shade

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- Mercury astronauts John Glenn, left, and Scott Carpenter sit in front of the plot board from the Mercury control center on display at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. The astronauts, part of the original class of seven astronauts chosen by NASA, were taking part in a question-and-answer session with the media as part of events celebrating 50 years of Americans in orbit, an era which began with John Glenn's Mercury mission MA-6, on Feb. 20, 1962. Glenn's launch aboard an Atlas rocket took with it the hopes of an entire nation and ushered in a new era of space travel that eventually led to Americans walking on the moon by the end of the 1960s. Glenn soon was followed into orbit by Carpenter, Walter Schirra and Gordon Cooper. Their fellow Mercury astronauts Alan Shepard and Virgil "Gus" Grissom flew earlier suborbital flights. Deke Slayton was grounded by a medical condition until the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project in 1975. Photo credit: NASA/Kim Shiflett KSC-2012-1440

A view of the USS ARIZONA Memorial which spans the sunken hulk of the battleship USS ARIZONA (BB 39). The ship was sunk in the opening minutes of World War II during the Japanese attack on the harbor. Over 1,000 men are entombed in the vessel's hull, now a national cemetery

Tug boats move the amphibious assault ship USS TRIPOLI (LPH-10) into a dry dock for repairs to the damage that was sustained when the ship struck an Iraqi mine. The TRIPOLI hit the mine on February 18 while serving as a mine-clearing platform in the northern Persian Gulf during Operation Desert Storm. The ship was able to continue operations after damage control crews stopped the flooding caused by the explosion

A Diver from the Resolve Marine Group signals his readiness for an upcoming dive as the decommissioned US Navy (USN) Intrepid Class Aircraft Carrier USS ORISKANY (CV 34), undergoes final preparations for its scheduled sinking, while moored to the pier at Naval Air Station (NAS) Pensacola, Florida (FL). The ORISKANY will be towed 22 miles south of Pensacola in approximately 212 feet of water where it will become the largest ship ever intentionally sunk as an artificial reef. After ORISKANY reaches the bottom, ownership of the vessel will transfer from the USN to the State of Florida

A close-up view of the bow of the amphibious assault ship USS TRIPOLI (LPH-10) sits in drydock following repair of a large hole 10 feet beneath its waterline. Four sailors were injured and the vessel severely damaged when an Iraqi mine exploded near the TRIPOLI on February 18 as helicopters from the ship conducted minehunting operations in the Persian Gulf during Operation Desert Storm
