Robert French - Ulster Hall, Belfast, Co. Antrim
Summary
Having enjoyed a week celebrating the life and photography of the late Elinor and Reginald Wiltshire we are back this week with an image by the legendary Robert French. This fine cabinet sized glass plate of the Ulster Hall to start our foreshortened week! Apparently taken during a lull of activity with people, children and drivers standing still for the photograph, this shot looks very clean and fresh despite its age!..Much of today's discussions surrounded the posters visible under the 1880s verandah. These posters, reliably dated to July 1889 by our own Carol Maddock ( /photos/47297387@N03/ ) , appear to advertise a lecture by political economist and 'land nationaliser' Henry George (1839-1897) ( Henry_George ) . It seems likely the image therefore dates to mid-summer in 1889.......Photographer: Robert French..Collection: Lawrence Photograph Collection ( http://catalogue.nli.ie/Collection/vtls000313414 ) ..Date: Catalogue range c.1865-1914. Almost certainly c.July 1889..NLI Ref: L_CAB_05070 ( vtls000334792 ) ..You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie ( http://catalogue.nli.ie )
