Backpackers on the Stehekin Valley Road
Just about everybody who makes it to one of five Havasupai waterfalls, including Ryan Hardwick (left) and Jamie L. Werling here, exults after the requisite steep, draining 20-mile round-trip hike as the crow flies " a zig-zag 30 miles of actual footsteps " it takes to get here. This is Havasu Falls, deep in Arizona's Havasu Canyon, an offshoot of Grand Canyon National Park but on lands administered by the Havasupai Indian Tribe
Distance hikers Heather and Richard Moutoux, of Boulder, Colorado, are off on perhaps the walk of a lifetime. They will soon leave the 6.2-mile Waterton Canyon Trail, which follows the South Platte River's course from Jefferson into Douglas counties below Denver, onto the exponentially more challenging Colorado Trail. The latter, which begins in Waterton Canyon, winds 486 miles south through the Rocky Mountains, all the way to Durango in the southwest corner of the state
