World War Memorial - Fitchburg, Massachusetts, USA. Sculptor: Herbert Adams (1858-1945). Commissioned 1926. Dedicated Nov. 12, 1928. Smithsonian SIRIS Control Number: IAS 77000623, with description: "A loosely draped female figure holding a furled flag in her proper left hand stands atop a tall square base. Her proper right hand is extended, bestowing honor on those who died during World War I. On her armored breast plate is the insignia of the United States. As she walks, her cloak is carried back by the breeze creating the effect of wings." Inscription: "Herbert Adams MCMXXVIII (On front of base:) TO THE MEMORY OF THOSE/WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN/THE WORLD WAR - 1914-1918/THE CITY OF FITCHBURG/DEDICATES THIS MONUMENT (On bronze plaque, west side of base:) These Gave Their Lives (list of 63 who died during the war) signed".
