In the shallow waters of the rivers and lakes, extending north of the latitude40°, the Zizania Palustris is found in such quantities as to furnish one of the principalmeans of Indian subsistence. It is thus still obtained in the principal shallow lakes andstreams of Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota, and in the valleys of the upperMississippi and Mis.souri. It is ripe in September.
