Ggorge Bancroft, the historian, also laid his tributeof respect upon the tomb of the martyr, in a eulogy re-markable for its eloquence and sententiousness; whileHenry Ward Beecher, the orator of the Americanpulpit, delivered in the Plymouth Church, Brooklyn, asermon on the death of the President which has not beensurpassed by any funeral oration called fgrth by the eventwhich threw the country into mourning. Gleneral Hiram Walbridgjs, of New York, one of themost prominent men in theNorth—a man whc was po-litically opposed to the election of Mr. Lincoln, but aman of undoubted patriotism—at an immense meetingheld in memory of the deceased President, delivered anaddress worthy of the distinguished speaker and of thehallowed character of which he spoke. HON. SCHUYLER COLFAXS ADDRESS. 261 ABRAHAM LUSTCOLK—HIS RELIGIOUS CHAR-ACTER AND NOBILITY OP HEART—ADDRESSor THE HON. SCHUYLER COLFAX, AT BRYANHALL, CHICAGO, SUNDAY, APRIL 30, 1865. Every seat in Bryan Hall, and eveiy inch of standingroom, was occupied by the audience, who came, notwith-standing the inclemency of the weather, to hear Schuy-ler Colfax, the Speaker of the National House ofRepresentatives, speak of the virtues and character ofthe dead President. The Chair was occupied by John V. Farwell, Esq.,the President of the Northwestern P-ranch of the Chris-tian Commission. The services were opened with Prayerby Professor F. W. Fisk, D. D., of the Chicago Theo-logical Seminary ; after which Mr. Farwell introducedthe eloquent speaker, in a few befitting and appropriateremarks. Mr. Colfax was loudly applauded.
